Need more caffeine to get you going in the morning? If you’re getting a cup of coffee at one of our cafes the quick fix is to add a shot of espresso to your coffee but what about brewing highly caffeinated coffee at home?
Co-Founders and brothers Paul and Jared, of Five Lakes Coffee set out to solve this problem. Of course they had to answer some questions first and after plenty of roast combinations and taste testing, we have the answers!
How do we make an extra caffeinated coffee?
To make it extra caffeinated we use a blend of Arabica and Robusta coffee beans which have 2x the caffeine of Arabica. This allows us to increase the caffeine content naturally without adding caffeine from outside sources.
How strong do we want it to be?
It should be strong! In fact, at our recommended brewing ratio of 2 tablespoons per 6 ozs of water Angry Brew has 70% more caffeine than our regular coffee which registers at 20.7 mg/ fl oz. If you want stronger than that you can use 2.5 tablespoons of ground coffee per 6 ozs of water.
Should it taste good?
Of course it should taste good! Paul and Jared are fans of our house roast so they didn’t want it to be too dark. So, we chose to do a roast that is just in our dark roast parameters that dark roast drinkers and house roast drinkers alike can enjoy.
What about our commitment to Fair Trade?
Yes, we want to maintain our commitment to Organic, Fair Trade and Rainforest Alliance coffees! To do this we use Fair Trade certified organically grown coffee beans from Latin America blended with Robusta coffee.
Do we want to be a novelty coffee so that we can claim the strongest coffee in the world or have something that you can enjoy daily at home?
No, we don’t want to be a novelty coffee that’s too strong! We want something that you can enjoy daily. At 70% more caffeine we think you can do exactly that but don’t get too carried away!
